VALUES

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Unlike traditional accreditation models, NWPS was designed specifically for Washington’s current community expectations:

Key differentiators include:

  • Community-centered accreditation standards grounded in documented engagement and feedback

  • Modern accountability practices supported by clear criteria and independent evaluation

  • A supportive, collaborative accreditation process focused on improvement and capacity-building

  • Education-focused guidance that prioritizes corrective action and continuous improvement over punitive oversight

Our Board

The Northwest Public Safety Accreditation Board provides independent governance and strategic oversight of the accreditation program. The Board is intentionally composed of community leaders, public safety professionals, and subject-matter experts to ensure balance, credibility, and impartiality.

Board members do not conduct accreditation assessments. Their role is to safeguard the integrity, transparency, and independence of the standards and accreditation process.

Our accreditation process follows a structured, multi-phase review designed to evaluate compliance with community policing standards, strengthen transparency, and support continuous improvement.

How Accreditation Works

  • Agencies register and receive access to guidelines, timelines, and the NWPS Standards Manual.

  • Participating agencies conduct a structured self-assessment against NWPS accreditation standards. Agencies review policies, practices, and documentation, identify gaps, and prepare required evidence for external review. Technical guidance may be provided to support readiness.

  • NWPS conducts a comprehensive review of submitted documentation to assess alignment with accreditation standards. This includes policy analysis, data review, and verification of required practices, with particular attention to transparency, accountability, and community engagement requirements.

  • Trained assessors conduct an on-site engagement visit to validate documentation and observe practices in operation. This phase may include interviews, community listening sessions, and stakeholder engagement to ensure standards are implemented consistently and effectively.

  • Accreditation status is determined based on a weighted evaluation of compliance with NWPS standards. Agencies may receive full accreditation, provisional accreditation with a corrective action plan, or guidance for continued improvement. Accreditation outcomes are documented and subject to periodic review and renewal.
